摘要

Diabetic foot is an important complication of diabetes mellitus though often neglected which is marked by neuropathy, peripheral vascular dysfunction, and vulnerability to infections. This chapter imparts a comprehensive overview of the complex and diverse elements that contribute to the development of diabetic foot which can further lead to diabetic ulcer. It emphasizes the underlying mechanisms of the condition, the various symptoms that might occur, and the factors that increase the likelihood of its occurrence. This text highlights the significance of thorough diabetic foot care and explores preventive measures such as patient education, routine foot inspections, and maintaining glycemic control. Furthermore, it covers the fundamental concepts of efficient administration, including wound treatment in diabetic foot ulcers, prevention of infections, and methods for reducing pressure on affected areas by offloading techniques. Newer tools like DIAFORA can be used to classify and predict diabetic foot ulcer patients who are susceptible to lower extremity amputation. By promptly identifying and addressing diabetic foot issues and by empowering patients, we can reduce the impact of these complications, improve quality of life, and decrease the occurrence of amputations in diabetic individuals.
