Introduction

This chapter introduces the background and theoretical foundations of mechanism design. We start by mathematically defining mechanisms and presenting the celebrated Revelation Principle. Next, we examine two widely studied objectives and the well-known mechanisms that optimize them. We also explore the challenges in both the theory and application of mechanism design, highlighting the gap between the two. Finally, we propose our AI-driven mechanism design framework and explain why this approach is necessary.
