Using Virtual Reality (VR) to Enhance Student Learning of Construction Systems in Civil Engineering Education

Civil engineering education needs a revamp to bridge the gap between theory and real-world practice. Textbooks and drawings fall short in immersing students in the complexities of construction, where adhering to mandatory building codes and achieving efficient, high-quality results are paramount. Virtual Reality (VR) offers a promising solution. VR creates realistic simulations where students can virtually explore construction sites, manipulate building components, and visualize processes firsthand. This immersive experience goes beyond traditional methods by fostering spatial reasoning skills crucial for engineers. Students also gain a deeper understanding of constructability - the ability to design and build structures efficiently while adhering to mandatory building codes. This is achieved through virtual interaction with materials, equipment, and logistical challenges. VR simulations further enhance learning by enabling hands-on activities in a safe, controlled environment. This paper explores the potential of VR as a novel teaching tool for construction systems education in civil engineering curricula. By reviewing existing research and presenting the results of a VR implementation case study for confined masonry buildings, the paper aims to contribute valuable insights to the discussion on innovative teaching methods in civil engineering.
