This chapter discusses how consensus processes are used by scientists to agree on what research methodologies in their field are sound. Many methodological innovations are accepted by a spontaneous consensus. This is more likely where there is no existing method or existing methods can be improved. With such methods, the level of innovation is high and can be provided by an individual scientist or a small team. Other methodological innovations achieve consensus through a deliberative process. This more commonly occurs where there are existing methods, but these need standardization or infrastructure for dissemination. It requires coordination of efforts across a larger number of scientists and may require creating a new organization to support the dissemination of the methodology.
