Overcoming the Challenges Posed by Emergency Remote Teaching in Engineering and Product Design Teaching: Insights from Student Preferences

This study analyzes the evolving student preferences toward remote teaching by categorizing the curriculum of engineering and design programs into design-centric courses, mechanics-based courses, etc. A survey with 41 questions was separately administered across 5 universities in Europe, North America, and South America during both years of emergency remote teaching during the COVID-19 pandemic (2020 and 2021). The changes in student preferences by statistical analyses using factor analysis and analysis of variance across the 2 academic years are reported. The results provide indications that there is a feasible blend of face-to-face and remote teaching in specific teaching areas that could alleviate student concerns and enhance their satisfaction. The potential for innovative teaching techniques and futuristic disruptive technological solutions to overcome the primary challenges faced by students are then discussed by analyzing both the quantitative results from the survey and student responses to a set of qualitative questions.
