New Formal Analysis: A Methodology to Identify the Visual Characteristics of the Community Art Form
摘要
In the realm of nature, everything possesses distinct traits, discernible through various senses. Similarly, visual arts possess their unique characteristics, perceptible through the eyes of the beholder. In community-based artwork, multiple artisans collaborate to create a single art form, and they tend to adhere to long-established guidelines and conventions. Recognizing the visual attributes of such community artwork has consistently posed a challenge for both viewers and researchers. To study the visual characteristics of these art forms and to bridge this gap in design comprehension, a novel method called new formal analysis has been developed and introduced. This methodology has been applied through the examination of cow dung mural art from various regions within the state of Jharkhand. Data was collected from five to six districts in Jharkhand, and valuable information was obtained from the rural communities residing there. The results revealed that the new formal analysis methodology significantly aids viewers and designers in identifying the distinctive visual characteristics of the artwork. This approach has the potential to inaugurate a new era in the revival of community art forms, which are at risk of fading away due to globalization and a lack of awareness.
