Correlation in Disparity: A Pedagogical Experiment for Design Innovation

Design education is continually evolving, using inventive and creative methods. Methods are continuously evolving while innovative techniques keep pushing the boundaries and refining existing practices. The inception of a design undertaking assumes paramount significance, serving as the fulcrum upon which the entire project pivots, delineating its trajectory and setting the tone for ensuing phases. The research is focused on a new exploratory methodology where a synthesis of two contrasting concepts—Biomimicry and Dynamic mechanisms—are implemented as design generators. The conceptual framework derives its essence from the juxtaposition of two disparate fields, thereby synergistically augmenting and fortifying their respective domains. This symbiotic amalgamation not only enriches the intellectual discourse but also imparts resilience to the integrated construct. As experimental qualitative research, the outcomes of the students’ works, and their response to the challenge of the brief were collected and analyzed. The process undertaken by each group was also observed through first-hand interactions and design discussions as mentors of the studio. The studies demonstrate that students were able to connect and uncover similarities between the disciplines, while also using learnings from the similarities to mediate certain shortcomings in their individual studies. Furthermore, the distinctions also provided an approach that can be perceived as a method to be adopted in catalyzing the emergence of new designs.
