摘要

Climate change has presented itself as one of the most pressing global challenges at present, profoundly impacting various aspects of human life. Its ecological impacts include rising global temperatures, increased frequency and intensity of extreme weather events such as hurricanes, floods, droughts, air pollution, soil erosion, water contamination, and alterations in temperature and rainfall patterns affecting the habitats and behaviour of disease vectors. Beyond its environmental implications, climate change has far-reaching consequences for human health, such as heat-related illnesses, prevalence and transmission of infectious diseases, tick-borne illness, allergies, respiratory and cardiovascular diseases, waterborne illness, etc., are the health-related concerns in India. India, specifically, is more prone to extreme weather events that can result in degradation of monsoon-dependent agricultural productivity, water availability for consumption as well as irrigation that can result in food insecurity and malnutrition especially among marginalized population, along with direct impact such as physical injuries, disturbance in healthcare services, and mental health challenges. By exploring existing policy frameworks, best practices, and case studies, this chapter offers practical examples of successful approaches, enabling policymakers to take informed decisions that protect public health and advance sustainable development for achieving the SDGs. It aims to highlight the significance of knowledge dissemination, spreading awareness and capability enhancement to deal efficiently with climate change and its repercussions on health and environment by drawing attention to the necessity for communication and science of climate change and health literacy, community involvement in facilitating required behaviour transformation in society, and promoting support for policy initiatives that will eventually empower the communities and populace to act. Therefore, by advancement of knowledge, skill, talent, and fostering comprehensive understanding about the inter-relatedness of climate change and health, it can be assured that the national and international climate change plans and policies are in cohesion with health considerations, and various sectors and stakeholders such as health, environment, disaster management, etc., work in unison.
