Erasing the Body
摘要
Biotechnologies and animal genomics have enabled the genetic modification of animals, as well as the crossing of species boundaries in order to create new animal varieties. Genetically altered animals, clones, transgenics, knockouts, and chimeras are established in scientific research as model systems for human diseases and in industrial agriculture for improved efficiency as food. However, by presenting new conceptions of humans and animals, these technologies also shift our understanding of what animals are and in doing so, “redefine the human-animal relationship within both science and society” (Ung-Lanki, 2014).
