In general, IEEE releases a new Wi-Fi standard every 4–5 years. Wi-Fi 7 is the latest Wi-Fi generation in 2024. It is foreseeable that the Wi-Fi 8 specification will be completed around 2027, and Wi-Fi 8 products will start to hit the market by 2028. Wi-Fi 8 originated from the Ultra-High Reliability Study Group (UHR SG), established by IEEE in July 2022. This group aims to focus on improving the reliability of Wi-Fi connections, further reducing latency, improving Wi-Fi manageability, optimizing throughput across varying signal-to-noise ratios, and minimizing power consumption. This chapter begins by providing insights into the evolving broadband access and mobile communication technologies, which coincide with the development period of Wi-Fi 8. Subsequently, the chapter discusses the latest developments in the Wi-Fi 8 standard, such as further advancements in traditional key Wi-Fi technologies and technical solutions for multi-AP collaboration. Additionally, the chapter briefly introduces new Wi-Fi technology topics, including those related to Millimeter-wave Bands and Artificial Intelligence/Machine Learning.
