Langmuir–Blodgett Films: A Unique Approach Towards Monomolecular Assemblies

Thin films of few nanometers are the sources of high expectations as being useful components in many practical and commercial applications such as sensors, detectors, and electronic circuit components. The possibility to synthesize organic molecules almost without limitations with desired structures and functionality in conjunction with a sophisticated thin film deposition technology enables the production of electrically, optically, and biologically active components on a nanometer scale. An organic thin film can be deposited on a solid substrate by various techniques such as thermal evaporation, solvent casting, spin coating, dip coating, plasma polymerization, sputtering, electro-deposition, molecular beam epitaxy, adsorption from solution, solvent casting, lithography, Langmuir–Blodgett (LB) technique, Layer by Layer self-assembly, etc. The scientific interest in the fabrication and characterization of ultrathin films prepared by the Langmuir–Blodgett (LB) technique has earned considerable attention in recent years as it offers an elegant method of organizing molecules at the microscopic level. It is one of the most promising and reliable methods for the preparation of films of nanometer order thickness as it offers precise control over monolayer and multilayer growth, homogeneous deposition over a large area, and the possibility to make multi-structure LB films with varying layer composition. This technique also allows the forming of thin films on almost any kind of substrate. Moreover, these films’ optical, electrical, and other aggregating behaviors can be changed markedly by varying LB parameters, which may be extremely useful for a specific technological application. Hence, a detailed investigation of these films is extremely necessary, and a comparative analysis with other techniques of thin film depositions allows one to optimize different parameters in such films. These studies already opened promising possibilities for the fabrication of various devices in the field of molecular electronics. It is also important to study the spectroscopic characteristics of these films to understand the basic physics involved in such monomolecular assemblies of molecules. In this chapter, we highlighted the basic details in a very simple manner regarding the formation of thin films by following the Langmuir–Blodgett (LB) technique along with various aspects of linked mechanisms in order to study such a system of great importance.
