Post-Polio Syndrome

A proportion of sufferers of polio, many years later, develop increasing weakness and dysfunction in the areas initially affected by polio and spill over to other areas as well. The involvement is restricted to the lower motor neuron. The condition needs to be differentiated from other causes of lower motor neuron diseases and the background of poliomyelitis is perhaps the most important. While new cases of polio are not encountered in modern times, individuals affected by post-polio syndrome are seen from time to time. Therapy is supportive.
