摘要

Periodic paralyses are a group of channelopathies resulting in repetitive muscle weakness lasting for hours to days. Certain triggers precipitate the attacks and initially, patients remain normal in between attacks. If multiple events occur, residual weakness can ensue. Periodic paralysis can be primary or secondary to acquired conditions such as thyrotoxicosis. Primary forms are hyperkalemic, hypokalemic and Anderson-Tawil syndrome. Genetic diagnosis is now feasible. Avoiding triggers and appropriate therapy improves quality of life.
