Porphyrias

Porphyrias are disorders of heme synthesis resulting in rapid quadriparesis, autonomic dysfunction, psychiatric manifestations, and abdominal pains, forming a close differential diagnosis to Guillain-Barre syndrome. Rapid therapy with glucose and intravenous heme administration can improve and reverse the neurodeficits. Prevention, early diagnosis, and therapy are important in long-term prognosis.
