Social support provides a buffer against adverse life events and has an immense influence on developing a person’s self-concept. The importance of social support holds relatively higher significance for people from marginal communities, such as the LGBT community. Arunachal Pradesh, a small north-eastern state of India that is very much in its nascent stage in terms of recognizing the LGBT community, can be said to be a society where a movement toward an attitude of equality for the LGBT community has not yet received wider acceptance. The present study thus aims to explore the social support system of the LGBT community of Arunachal Pradesh and its relationship with their self-concept. A mixed-methods approach has been employed wherein 75 LGBT individuals (aged 16–35) were administered the Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support and Self Concept Clarity Scale. Further, an in-depth interview was conducted with ten Arunachali LGBT people to gain a deeper understanding of the aspects of the relationship between social support and self-concept which might not have been explored in the quantitative research. The participants reported a lower degree of support from family but a higher degree of support from their friends and significant other. The result showed that support from family and friends were positively related to self-concept while support from significant other was negatively related to self-concept. Those who have less clarity about their self-belief tend to depend more on someone whom they consider very close. Cultivating a strong self-concept can be achieved by developing a strong bond and unwavering support from family.
