The genetic resources encompass a wide range of varieties, cultivars, and wild relatives, providing a reservoir of desirable traits such as flavor, texture, shelf life, and resistance to diseases and pests. The systematics of melon highlights the primary gene pool’s importance in breeding programs. Genetic diversity is critical for developing hybrids that can thrive in varying environmental conditions. Effective conservation strategies are vital to preserve muskmelon’s genetic diversity. This includes ex situ conservation methods like seed banks and in situ conservation practices that maintain genetic variability within natural habitats.
