Utilization of Organic Solid Waste for Hydrocarbon Contaminated Soil Remediation Through Co-composting: A Review

Hydrocarbons are one of the most contaminants that are difficult to degrade and toxic. Soil pollution by hydrocarbons can be caused by crude oil contamination from petroleum production activities. Therefore, hydrocarbon contaminated soil requires removal technology that is safe for the environment (biological methods). Co-composting is a biological method that can be applied to remediate hydrocarbon contaminated soil. The principle of this method is the addition of nutrients to increase and stimulate the activity of indigenous microorganisms that can decompose hydrocarbons. Co-composting is carried out by mixing polluted soil with organic waste. Co-composting is carried out with a certain composition to obtain the best amount of nutrients for microorganisms (C/N ratio). The types of organic waste added also influence this process. Co-composting has been proven to be able to remove hydrocarbons from polluted soil based on several previous studies.
