Local Motor Cart (LMC) in Peri-Urban India: Political Economy of Unorganized Transport

Contemporarily, the sphere of academic discussion on “political economy” is pursuing to solve many unexplained multidimensional or semi-multidimensional problems connecting to the present-day world. In view of the said purpose, the present chapter endeavored to discuss the emerging scenario of the debut of the “local motor cart” (LMC), especially in the peri-urban areas of India. This section also seeks to understand the causes and consequences of LMC on the local economy, local-level politics, and the local environment. With the help of tertiary data support, participatory discussion (with government officials, local leaders, and entrepreneurs), and field observations, this chapter is filled to highlight the unexplained phenomenon of political economy concerning new participants in the unorganized sector, the role of a local political system, unpaid corner of legal taxation, and sustainable environment. Finally, the study outreaches that more study should be needed in this corner of the emerging scenario of LMC and its future legal procedure to be legalized for the sake of local people and the environment.
