Shanghai: A Vibrant Metropolis Where Modernity Meets Traditions Through Cultural Fusion

Shanghai is a traditional large and developed city, with the total area of 6340.5 km2 and the built-up area of 1237.85 km2 [19]. By 2019, Shanghai had 16 districts, including 107 subdistricts, 106 towns, and 2 townships [16]. According to the national population census in 2020, Shanghai had a permanent resident population of 24.8709 million [17], while some figures suggest a population of over 28 million by now. Alongside Beijing, Chongqing, and Tianjin, Shanghai is one of the four direct-administrated municipalities in China, which is located in the east of China, on the coast near the East China Sea [58]. Its regional importance and national status indicate Shanghai’s position at the national and global level [12, 13]. It is a constituent part of the Yangtze River Delta, which consists of a group of cities around the estuary of the Yangtze River.
