A Novel Arm Current Direct Control Strategy for Nine-Arm Modular Multilevel Converter

Nine-arm modular multilevel converter (9A-MMC) is integrated from two modular multilevel converters in back-to-back connection (BTB-MMCs) by multiplexing middle arm, which can effectively reduce system volume, weight, and cost. To simplify control strategy and increase control degrees of freedom, a novel control strategy for 9A-MMC based on arm current direct control is proposed in this paper. First, the topology structure and arm average model of 9A-MMC are briefly introduced. Then, the conventional control strategy of 9A-MMC is presented with its disadvantages. Subsequently, the arm current direct control strategy for 9A-MMC is put forward. Finally, the proposed control strategy is verified by simulation results.
