An In-Depth Analysis of Morocco’s New Strategies for Agricultural Transformation and Industrializing Agriculture for Sustainability and Peace

Morocco has invested heavily in agricultural innovations to enhance productivity and yield. However, the sector faces challenges of water scarcity, climate change, and smallholder farmers. Industrializing agriculture through advanced irrigation systems, manufacturing plants, and access to resources for smallholders can address these challenges. This study examines how industrializing Moroccan agriculture can promote sustainability and peace. First, it can improve economic and environmental sustainability by increasing the sector’s overall impact and diversifying the economy. Second, it can generate new jobs, reducing unemployment that is a source of social unrest. Third, industrialization can help smallholders cope with challenges through access to technology, financing, and markets, improving their livelihoods and wellbeing. The findings suggest that industrializing agriculture, if done equitably and sustainably, can contribute to both economic development and social peace in Morocco by making the sector more resilient and inclusive. However, careful planning, governance reforms, and investment in smallholders will be needed to ensure the benefits of industrialization are widely shared. The study contributes to the literature on agricultural transformation and development by highlighting how industrialization strategies can promote sustainability and social goals, not just economic growth. It also provides practical recommendations for Moroccan policymakers seeking to advance these dual objectives through agricultural policy.
