By reviewing 40 relevant literatures, this study explores how mixed reality technology affects various dimensions of visitor engagement during a museum visit. Activity theory provides a perspective for understanding the complex interplay between visitors, technology, and the museum environment, revealing the transformative impact of mixed reality technology on the visitor experience when visiting a museum. This paper analyzes from six dimensions: subjects, tools and artifacts, objects, community, division of labor, historical and cultural context, and reveals the multi-faceted nature of mixed reality technology used to enhance museum visitors’ experience, highlighting the interaction between individual behavior, social interaction, and cultural relics. In addition, the paper discusses how different age groups of visitors lead to different responses to mixed reality tour experiences and provides recommendations for designing and implementing mixed reality technology for visits to optimize visitor engagement and learning outcomes. Overall, this study contributes to the growth of museum technology literature and provides a theoretical framework for analyzing mixed reality technologies to enhance visitor experiences in museum environments.
