Wastewater management is a pressing issue due to increasing water scarcity driven by limited freshwater resources and pollution from untreated discharges. Industries generate large volumes of saline wastewater from various processes that require proper treatment and disposal. Conventionally, a significant portion of this wastewater is discharged into water bodies without adequate treatment. This leads to contamination and reduces the availability of water for reuse. To address this challenge, this chapter examines zero liquid discharge (ZLD) and minimal liquid discharge (MLD) as sustainable approaches for managing saline industrial wastewater. It provides background on the growing need for alternative wastewater management strategies. An overview is presented of various pretreatment, preconcentration, and brine treatment technologies used in ZLD/MLD systems. Both traditional technologies like evaporation and emerging innovations using membranes are discussed. The roles of major companies in advancing the field through new systems and developments are highlighted. Potential future research directions are also explored to support wider adoption of ZLD/MLD, such as enhancing process efficiency and evaluating economic and social impacts. The integration of digital technologies like IoT and AI to optimize system operations is also examined. Overall, the chapter analyzes ZLD/MLD technologies and their role in minimizing liquid discharges from industries for improved wastewater sustainability.
