Numerous environmental and health issues are being brought on by the fast generation of waste and poor management techniques. This chapter presents an overview of the problems with waste pollution that exist today and looks at possible directions for waste management in the future. Waste generation is increasing at an unprecedented rate due to the exponential growth of industrialization and urbanization. This growth is occurring in both quantity and diversity. Pollution of the air, water, and land is the result of improper disposal techniques and inadequate waste management infrastructure. Wide-ranging effects include a decline in biodiversity, tainting of water supplies, and a contribution to climate change. The persistence of single-use plastics, insufficient recycling infrastructure, and inadequate waste reduction strategies are some of the current waste management challenges. An all-encompassing and integrated approach to waste management is necessary to meet these challenges. This entails promoting circular economy ideas, which place a strong emphasis on recycling, reuse, and reduction of material. Innovative technologies that improve efficiency and lessen environmental impact include waste-to-energy processes and sophisticated sorting and recycling technologies. Educating and raising public awareness are essential to promoting a responsible waste management culture. To ascertain the correct disposal and treatment of waste, governments, businesses, and communities must work together to create strong policies and regulations. To address the global aspect of waste pollution and advance sustainable practices, more elaborate and international cooperation is imperative.
