The blockchain is a distributed peer-to-peer network that is transforming many domains of industry, including health care. Electronic Health Records (EHRs) are digital forms of a patient's health information. The growing world of electronic health records allows easier access to the patient's data on health care. Thus, data security and patient privacy need to be ensured in such situations. This paper presents a secure approach to ensuring the privacy and security of the patient’s electronic health records using Role Based Access Control (RBAC) and InterPlanetary File System (IPFS) within the blockchain. Role Based Access Control (RBAC) not only secures sensitive medical data stored in electronic health records (EHRs) but also provides access control mechanisms. The patient will be able to define access controls by the various roles and control permissions to their records, thereby protecting their sensitive medical information. A mutual sense of trust is achieved between the medical staff and the patient through the use of blockchain. The combination of blockchain and Role Based Access Control (RBAC) makes sharing of data between authorized organizations more transparent, easier, and secure without the need for any intermediaries. Furthermore, storing these health records in an InterPlanetary File System (IPFS) enhances data accessibility. Thus, by using blockchain, smart contracts, and Role Based Access Control (RBAC), we can ensure transparency, privacy, and data integrity in healthcare data management.
