An Overview of Telemedicine with a Future Overlook

Telemedicine has emerged as a solution to improve efficiency and availability of healthcare systems. It is reducing problems, by creating more effective, alternative solutions, to organize regular clinical visits, monitoring chronic disease patients, manage medication, and operations’ follow-up actions. The implementation of telemedicine, during the COVID-19 pandemic, has played a crucial role in the delivery of medical services for many patients around the world. Technological innovations in telecommunication field such as 5G networks, wearable devices, and artificial intelligence (AI) play fundamental role in the expanding of telemedicine applications. It helped to substantially increase its incorporation across several medical fields. Telemedicine is considered as a relatively new technology, facing challenges such as limited Internet access and technology literacy, which hinder its wider adoption. The main objective of this article is to give a review of the latest publications and achievements in telemedicine and present our views of the future trends in this important domain.
