AI and University. A Successful Marriage

The dawn of artificial intelligence (AI) can be traced back to 1950, but it has been the recent advancements in machine learning, neural networks, and deep learning that have triggered a renewed interest in the field. AI is also transforming the educational realm and, in particular, how higher education institutions and universities operate. In this chapter, we begin by giving an overview of the legal status, ethics guidelines, compliance-related resources, and codes of conduct that govern its application (from the most global to the local ones). We then delve into the various academic areas where AI has proven to be effective, both for teaching and institutional management. We also highlight some of the cutting-edge AI-based tools that can be used by students, administration staff, and researchers. Finally, since this chapter focuses on the intersection of AI and colleges, we explore some of the modern AI-powered services that can be used for scientific work and research dissemination as well.
