Human-centered system design [HCSD] became a priority in system design when the designers identified the importance of user engagement. This was provided by the adoption of aligned technical sophistications. The concept of HCSD has come a long way since the introduction of the mouse or graphical user interface. Although artificial intelligence is becoming an important inter-relational subject, this paper had a retrospective look at the cognitive and learning theories. Accordingly, the proposal is to take the human system design to another level with the help of these theories. The study was conducted as a critical review of theories. Six cognitive theories and five learning theories have been reviewed in this study. The key takeaway of this study is the idea of user development in parallel to user experience in human-centered system design. While all the aspects of user satisfaction and human-centered design are kept as it is, the study suggests not only to improve the system, but also to improve the user by taking them through a learning process. Learning theories can be used for this purpose. Further, cognitive theories are also recommended to improve the user experience. However, the concept may not be suitable for every system. Provided that user development is vital for achieving the promoter’s requirements, the concept shall provide valuable insights into better human-centered system design.
