Towards Sustainable Neighborhoods: Mitigating Climate Change Through Sustainable Communities

Climate change imposes an urgent need to develop a multifaceted approach to the existing urban environments which currently contribute to 70% of global CO2 emissions [1] with transport and buildings being among the largest contributors. Traditional, centralized neighborhoods with car dependency are facing a growing need for innovative solutions that address issues of social isolation, environmental concern, and limited autonomy for residents. This paper explores the potential of decentralizing neighborhoods as a catalyst for climate mitigation. Taking the city of Jeddah as a case study, this research explores further into analyzing existing centralized model and deconstructing it based on the concept of 15 min city (FMC) to outline their core principles, including resources, diverse neighborhood options, emphasis on walkability and green spaces. Redesigning neighborhoods with sustainable principles in mind can significantly mitigate climate change impacts while creating more livable, resilient communities. The findings of this research will include survey results, recommendations, and will define a framework of adaptive methods for the city to foster a sense of community, well-being, and a healthier environment for all residents.
