Recently, micro-mobility has gained much attention as an emerging travel mode that uses micro-mobility vehicles including e-bikes and e-scooters to provide publicly accessible and hassle-free transportation in urban settings. Micro-mobility solutions have been employed in several major cities by leveraging technology for the purposes of improving the lives of citizens while benefiting the municipality by reducing vehicle emissions, traffic congestion and urban parking requirements. Notable benefits of this new trend include affordable, efficient and convenient transportation alternatives that also offer increased sustainability. This study focuses on the recently launched e-scooter micro-mobility initiative as a case study trial by the Royal Commission for Riyadh City, which has been deployed as part of the Smart Riyadh program for enhancing Riyadh’s smart city services and infrastructure. In this paper, the Diplomatic Quarter in Riyadh was selected as an ideal location for the initial pilot trial for deploying e-scooters in the community in order to facilitate quick and eco-friendly mobility for residents to commute. The initial goal of the initiative was to study the safety and user-acceptance of micro-mobility as an alternative transportation mode for the first and last mile. The pilot trial was vital for demonstrating the useability, user-acceptance, and safety as a proof-of-concept with its findings, analysis and recommendations used to provide the basis of the planned project expansion and consequent growth stages. Results of this pilot study had shown some key observations and possible solutions as well as the main challenges and recommendations for improvement. Finally, the pilot study was effective in demonstrating that overall reduced costs and faster journey times could be obtained with such a micro-mobility initiative with positive user satisfaction ratings.
