Use of Learning Technologies in Training and Adult Education in Singapore

The training and adult education (TAE) landscape in Singapore is constantly developing and transforming. The role of learning technologies in the context of continuing education and lifelong learning accelerated by COVID-19 is not well understood. This chapter explores the trends in the use of learning technologies that have been accelerated by COVID-19 and could persist in varying degrees after the pandemic, thereby having implications on the future of learning and work. It reports findings from a series of nationwide studies on the TAE sector that highlight (1) Continuation of hybrid learning; (2) Accelerated adoption of automation and the rise of artificial intelligence in learning; and (3) Use of learning technologies to structure a new relationship between learner-educator-learning contexts. It contends that the use of learning technologies needs to take a human-centred approach and future-ready learning requires a focus on developing individuals beyond work readiness for long-term development of learners. The chapter affirms the need to shape the use of learning technologies more decisively to advance sound pedagogical goals that prepare the workforce to be future-ready and resilient.
