Developing Self-Regulated Higher-Order Learning in Educational Settings and Workplace

摘要

Higher-order learning (HOL) is essential for mastering knowledge and is particularly relevant in today's rapidly changing job market where critical thinking, problem-solving and decision-making are highly valued. Especially in a modern artificial intelligence (AI) age, the value of isolated knowledge (lower-order learning) is rapidly diminishing. In a technologically evolving world, HOL helps learners become more resourceful and targeted in their learning approach. As a result, learners can navigate the rapidly changing demands of both their academic training and their future workplace more confidently. However, traditional curricula have historically underemphasized HOL development or viewed it from a primarily pedagogical lens, resulting in learners struggling to engage in HOL. This book chapter explores the crucial role of self-regulation in successfully promoting higher-order learning (HOL), regardless of pedagogy. The chapter outlines critical components and pragmatic solutions for facilitating HOL and self-regulation, as well as the implications of HOL and self-regulation on employability in an AI landscape.
