The role of ultrasound in imaging the neonatal gastrointestinal tract has become well established. Its ability to provide real-time, detailed information on bowel wall thickness, perfusion and peristalsis, without radiation exposure, holds immense value in neonatology. This becomes especially pertinent given the challenges in obtaining high-quality cross-sectional imaging in this population. Whether employed independently or with radiography/fluoroscopy, ultrasound is a versatile diagnostic tool capable of assessing a spectrum of gastrointestinal tract conditions. While its routine use for certain indications is standard practice, there remains ongoing work to expand its applications to cases where systematic use is not yet widespread. This chapter on ultrasound imaging of the neonatal gastrointestinal tract offers an overview of its technical aspects and its role in the assessment of common, and uncommon neonatal gastrointestinal tract conditions.
