Air in the lungs was earlier looked upon as a deterrent for evaluation of the lungs. However, in the recent past, the same artefacts produced by air in the lungs are being used for the diagnosis of various lung conditions. Ultrasound has been found to be superior to conventional radiology in the diagnosis and follow up of patients with respiratory distress syndrome as it is less expensive, available at the bedside and does not expose the patient to ionizing radiation. Ultrasound also provides real time imaging allowing evaluation of dynamic changes in the lung tissue.

摘要
