Smart Fish Feeding System in Aquaculture

Aquaculture has become a pivotal sector in global food production, yet faces several significant challenges. In advanced or modern aquaculture systems, manual feeding often results in problems such as excessive use of feed and antibiotics, toxin ingestion, and competition among fish. This article presents a smart fish feeding system that utilizes imaging technology to replicate fish behavior, thereby, mitigating the adverse effects of conventional feeding methods. An automatic fish feeder is a device designed to control feeding times, and dispenses fish feed only at predetermined intervals. This helps owners feed their fish even when they are physically unavailable, ensuring timely feeding. The primary goal of smart fish farming is to minimize food waste and enhance feed efficiency by improving the Feed Conversion Ratio (FCR), thus, optimizing ration requirements for the fish. An automatic fish feeding machine, developed through a design control system, exemplifies this smart technology, contributing to increased fish production. By optimizing feeding rates and minimizing waste, these systems offer greater flexibility, lower production costs, and lesser environmental impact. Specific systems incorporate feed management features, such as automated devices that dispense feed at precise times and quantities, thereby, eliminating human error. This chapter suggests that these machines have the potential to reduce the wastage of feed, labor requirements, and operational expenses substantially. Moreover, the sophisticated intelligence displayed by these smart feeding systems is capable of transforming the aquaculture sector.
