Principles and Practices of Shrimp Culture: Pre-stocking, Stocking and Post-stocking Management Practices
摘要
Shrimp is a major commodity in the seafood exports in various countries. Among the commercially important shrimps, Pacific white shrimp Litopenaeus vannamei became popular by surpassing Tiger shrimp Penaeus monodon. Among the global shrimp production, more than 90% is contributed by L. vannamei. The shrimp farming technology has been diversified and facing severe problems due to outbreaks of various viral, bacterial and fungal diseases world over. Uncontrolled farming practices have created environmental and socio-economic concern in almost all the countries. In order to have sustainable shrimp farming, an international consortium has been formed to study various global issues on shrimp farming and formulate certain strategies. The consortium consists of Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), the Network of Aquaculture Centres in Asia-Pacific (NACA), the United Nations Environmental Programme (UNEP), the World Bank (WB) and the World Wildlife Fund (WWF). The consortium has made wide consultations with all the stakeholders and formed the International Principles for Responsible Shrimp Farming, considering technical, environmental, social and economic issues. On the basis of these international strategies, various countries have been formulated certain guidelines suitable for their nations by ascertaining prevailing issues. In the present situation, all the shrimp farming communities, including the existing ones, need to follow the guidelines framed by respective nations and get registration. In this chapter, pre-stocking, stocking and post-stocking management practices have been discussed following certain guidelines.
