Unfortunately, several disease epidemics that have coincided with the growth of shrimp farming have resulted in significant losses in shrimp productivity. An increased risk of infection and subsequent reductions of stock in farmed animals are caused by various factors, making management of biosecurity difficult and multifaceted. Supplying domestic shrimp populations free from particular diseases (also known as “specific pathogen free,” or SPF) to shrimp-growing facilities is undoubtedly the most crucial element of a biosecurity program. Implementing plans involving all of the regional nations is essential for controlling the shrimp diseases. The Latin American, African, and other developing aquaculture nations need to incorporate and improve upon the lessons learned from the Asian countries. This development will feed local populace and increase a nation’s level of self-sufficiency. An essential part of a biosecurity strategy is keeping an emergency plan in place for the quarantine and elimination of disease, as well as conducting routine monitoring (surveillance) of shrimp stocks in a biosecure culture facility.
