Bacterial disease has emerged as serious concern in shrimp culture due to emergence of new pathogenic strains. The global pandemic of acute hepatopancreatic necrosis disease (AHPND) caused by pirAB toxin carrying strain of Vibrio parahaemolyticus and other Vibrio species caused huge economic losses in many shrimp farming nations. Luminescent vibriosis and photobacteriosis are other bacterial diseases frequently reported from shrimp hatcheries and farms. There is also a growing evidence of association of Vibrio and other bacterial species in white feces syndrome which is a major concern in shrimp culture. Antibiotics was used in the past for management of bacterial diseases in aquaculture. However, due to stringent rules pertaining to antibiotics application in shrimp culture, there is a need to find effective alternative therapeutic and preventive strategies for the control of bacterial infection.
