Stress Management and Anti-aging: Aging and Stress

  • Sumito Ogawa

摘要

As people age, they encounter and respond to many changes, including changes in household structure, living and working environments, health conditions, and the separation or death of close ones. These changes can often become sources of stress. In such cases, stress may manifest as a depressive state, and it becomes increasingly important to establish various support systems, including social support and health support, and to learn how to coexist with stress. Additionally, it is important to consider how to maintain the ability to maintain functions against aging phenomena and biological damage (robustness) and the ability of the organism to recover to its intended state when subjected to external stress (stability). For many species, aging is an important element in maintaining the population at an appropriate size, but unlike starvation, infection, and predators, it does not act as a driving force for evolution. All life functions are designed to maintain the homeostasis of the organism and are originally defensive. However, with the development of civilization, the lifespan has surpassed the limits of nature, and the damaging aspects of the organism have become apparent. Such cases, where the damaging nature becomes more apparent than the defensive nature due to aging exist in many forms, including oxidative stress, endoplasmic reticulum stress, and other stresses, apoptosis, and aging changes in immune function.
