Navigating the Future with the Nexus Between Digital Twin Computing and Urban Intelligence

In this concluding chapter of “Navigating the Future”, we delve deep into the transformative potential of the nexus between Digital Twin Computing (DTC) and Urban Intelligence (UI). As we have been going through a digital revolution in a rather fast pace, this convergence offers many prospects to revolutionise how we design, manage, and inhabit our urban environments and spaces. Ultimately, the nexus between DTC and UI helps us achieve optimised urban systems and institutions that could nurture urban productivity and sustainability. This chapter serves as a roadmap for the pathways ahead, outlining the key insights and recommendations garnered from contributing explorations and case studies that highlight the importance of integrating design twin computing and urban intelligence. As the name of the book entails, we are eager to see and direct how this integration could shape new paradigms in urbanism, urban management, and urban system development. We begin by reflecting on fundamentals, principles, and case study examples (i.e., both related to technologies and applications), tracing the evolution of both concepts and highlighting the synergies that have emerged between them. From their inception as technological innovations, DTC and UI have evolved into powerful tools for urban planners, policymakers, and citizens alike. Thus, this chapter provides a reflective overview of pathways ahead, by first discussing the importance of this novel nexus and then suggesting a few directions for future research.
