Virgaviridae is one of the International Committee on Taxonomy of Viruses’ (ICTV) recognized families of plant viruses which belongs to phylum Kitrinoviricota, class Alsuviricetes, and order Martellivirales (ICTV 2020). The Virgaviridae family is named in light of the fact that virions of this family are rod-shaped (from the Latin virga = rod). The tobacco mosaic virus (TMV) that was the first virus discovered in 1886 belongs to the Tobamovirus genus. It is studied extensively, extremely stable, and found in high concentrations in infected plants. The two scientists, Ivanoski and Beijerinck, contributed to the discovery of the first virus, tobacco mosaic virus, which was considered a milestone in the history of plant virology.
