The order Tymovirales encompasses five families: Alphaflexiviridae, Betaflexiviridae, Deltaflexiviridae, Gammaflexiviridae, and Tymoviridae. The Tymoviridae family consists of single-stranded positive-sense RNA viruses that naturally infect plants. The maize rayado fino virus (MRFV), a member of Tymoviridae, was first identified in Costa Rica by Gomez in 1969, targeting monocot plants. Later, Leon and Gomez (1981) elucidated its physicochemical properties. The complete genome sequence of MRFV was documented for the first time in 2001 by Hammond and Ramirez.
