Machine Welded Rebar Mat (MWRM), a new form of welded wire reinforcement manufactured from hot-rolled steel, is currently being used in few construction industries. Although welded wire has been used actively and successfully in a wide range of structures since the early 1900s, the implementation of MWRM in the construction industry is still uncommon or underutilized. Any proper guidelines for the usage of MWRM are also not available. Hence, this study develops an experimental program to evaluate the behavior and economic benefit of MWRM. The economic benefit of 8 mm dia MWRM is compared to 10 mm dia deformed bar (DB) for the construction of beam-supported two-way slab specimens. The detailed cost and time required for the construction of two sets of full-scale beam-supported two-way slab specimens having a dimension of 22 feet by 30 feet have been investigated. The results show that, considering Bangladesh's cheap labor market, MWRM is not significantly financially beneficial compared to the deformed bar for slab construction, but it offers cost savings in terms of storage and labor. Additionally, MWRM can be easily cut and shaped to fit around obstacles or into tight spaces - ensuring better quality, which can result in greater coverage per unit of material. The case study shows that MWRM can be laid in about 72 man-hours, whereas DB can be laid in about 160 man-hours for a slab construction. 55% of man-hours can be saved in total. Moreover, it solves the problem of space in narrow construction site and reduces noise pollution caused by rebar cutting and bending. MWRM is a plug and play for construction. The construction becomes fast for its reduced placement time. As the MWRM is factory produced, it retains better quality at construction site. Hence, MWRM is economically advantageous for construction of RC slabs.
