This research is part of an industrial grant with GeoID Hitech Industries Ltd which is a service provider for spatial data acquisition and specializes in geographical information system, data base and systems integration. LiDAR is known for its fast and accuracy in measurements and this research uses LiDAR technology to capture accurate survey of hills and terrains. Universiti Sains Malaysia is also known as the campus in the garden with extensive hills, trees and lakes. A strategic area measuring 100 m × 100 m was selected for the second part of the research which is the hills overlooking the football fields and the Penang Bridge. Airborne LiDAR, also known as airborne laser scanning, is employed in this context. It refers to a laser scanner that is affixed to an aircraft while in motion, enabling the production of a three-dimensional point cloud model of the surrounding terrain. This technique currently stands as the most meticulous and precise means of generating digital elevation models. Again, the LiDAR output is compared to the survey plan of the same site conducted in 2016 using the conventional method. Further advancements using LiDAR techniques on the terrain were also investigated. Using the USM terrain as the with the iconic capital letters of U, S and M several on site measurements were taken to compare with the data achieved from LiDAR. Results show that the measurements given by LiDAR data give good accuracy to field measurements thus encouraging its use for further studies due to its validity and reliability. The research concludes LiDAR as having many advantages compared to the conventional methods. LiDAR technology is fast developing leading the way to many newer uses in future. However conventional techniques should not be totally forgotten as they too can still be reliable and just as accurate.
