On Burhan or Proofs in Mantiq

Some divisions of burhan (demonstration) have been available both in classical and contemporary text books of mantiq (logic) in Islamic education. In other words, deviation and innovation concerning demonstration have been happening since the time of al-Farabi and Avicenna until today. This chapter also challenges the way mantiq establishes the divisions of burhan. Given that some Muslim philosophers made their own commentaries on Aristotle’s works of logic, their commentaries were inaccurate insofar as they relied on Hunayn ibn Ishaq’s and his team’s translations in which case applying the ad sensum approach.
