Afterword: English Medium Instruction (EMI) in Asia: The Culprit by Command?
摘要
This chapter critically examines English Medium Instruction (EMI) within the Asian context with the focus on the interplay of language policy, equity, and social justice. The chapter reflects on the complexities of EMI with an emphasis on its role as both a facilitator and a potential barrier to equitable education. Drawing from personal experiences, this chapter highlights the entrenched ideologies of Englishization as synonymous with internationalization, which often marginalize local languages and cultures. The discussion foregrounds the importance of teacher education and preparedness, advocating for professional development that incorporates social issues into EMI training. The chapter calls for a re-evaluation of EMI as a policy, urging the integration of translanguaging practices to promote inclusivity and foster critical awareness among educators. It posits that while EMI presents challenges, there is an opportunity to create a more equitable educational landscape by empowering stakeholders and encouraging bottom-up initiatives that challenge dominant language ideologies.
