The Guide for Wildland Urban Interface (WUI) Fires was developed by the National Research Council Canada (NRC) in consultation with a technical committee comprising of Canadian and international wildfire experts. It provides guidance on hazard and exposure assessment, property protection, community resilience and emergency planning to minimize the impact of wildland-urban interface fires in Canada. Subsequent to the development of the guide, the National Research Council of Canada has initiated an effort, funded by Infrastructure Canada under the Climate Resilient Built Environment initiative of the Government of Canada, which aims to implement the Guide over various locations, which are part of the National Building Code of Canada (NBC). This effort will quantify current and future projected wildfire hazard at the NBC reference locations, calculate exposure level of buildings to wildfire hazards as contributed by the surrounding fuel-types and slopes, and thereafter provide construction guidelines for different levels of wildfire property management. The outcomes of this work will allow building practitioners to easily access information useful for them to design wildfire resilient building in Canada. In this paper, the current state of this work and key results will be presented along with a description of the planned future phases of work.
