Reciprocal Relationships Within Rural Communities
摘要
This chapter highlights how schools and universities in rural places can develop mutually beneficial partnerships that enrich the local community and develop a rurally-responsive workforce. The chapter will unpack the literature pertaining to teacher partnerships as well as share stories of one rural-serving university’s journey into the development of meaningful and collaborative relationships with area districts. The chapter will begin with a discussion of the importance of reciprocal relationships between rural-serving universities and their local communities, focusing on the opportunities that both have to enrich each other. Next, we will examine how partnerships develop strategically to best meet the needs of teacher preparation programs while at the same time highlighting the strengths of partner school districts. In addition to partnerships with communities in the local area, the chapter will present a framework for collaborating with communities at a distance. These relationships allow future teachers to experience varied definitions of rural contexts and engage in authentic efforts related to diversity, equity, and inclusion. We will conclude by reflecting on how mutually beneficial partnerships are a promising strategy for a sustainable future for rural communities and rural-serving universities.
