摘要

Mechanization and automation play a significant role in promoting sustainability in plantation operations. These agricultural technologies which incorporate the use of renewable energy sources, smart systems, and precision farming can increase efficiency, reduce labor costs, and improve crop yields. However, it is important to acknowledge that challenges, such as high initial investment costs, can pose a significant barrier for smaller plantation owners or those with limited financial resources. Besides, advanced technologies used in plantation operations sometimes require specialized knowledge and expertise and the need for skilled labor must be overcome. Thus, through the transfer of technologies and adoption program, this chapter evocates how the implementation of mechanization and automation can lead to a more sustainable plantation operation by reducing environmental impacts, increasing profitability, and improving working conditions. The discussion highlights the importance of continued research and development in harvesting technology for the prospects of sustainability to ensure that the oil palm plantation industry can meet the demands of the future.
