摘要

The chapter explores the organic components and nutrient-rich content of palm oil mill effluent (POME) as well as the potential environmental impacts associated with its discharge. It highlights the importance of regulating and recovering nutrients from POME to support sustainable farming practices and reduce water pollution. The presence of heavy metals in POME is also discussed, emphasizing the need for careful monitoring and suitable treatment to prevent ecological concerns. The chapter further explores the role of beneficial microorganisms, such as bacteria, fungi, and actinomycetes, in composting POME. Their metabolic activities contribute to the breakdown of organic matter and the production of high-quality compost. The optimization of composting conditions can enhance the growth and activity of these microorganisms, providing sustainable and economically viable solutions for palm oil waste management while exploring potential industrial applications.
